I recently updated to macOS Sierra Version 10.12.5 hoping that the update would fix the problem it didn't. I've attempted to the same with the power connected to no avail. But the screen brightness does not change at all. When I try to adjust brightness using the keys, the grey icon appears on the screen and adjusts in accordance with the key strokes. Like you, I am unable to adjust the screen brightness using the corresponding keys (F1/F2) or even manually. My MBP is a late 2013 model with a 13" retina screen. Hi - I know my post is of no help, but I'm glad you posted this problem as I am having the same issue and it reassures me that I'm not missing something obvious or not so obvious.
